Self-esteem and Self-respect

As the famous Russian writer Fyodor Dostoevsky wrote, respect and self-esteem have a powerful link: -“If you want to be respected by others, the great thing is to respect yourself. Only by that, only by self-respect, will you compel others to respect you”.

Self-respect has three qualities: self-esteem, assertiveness and authenticity. Self-esteem, if we want to define it, is having a fair opinion of oneself. For example, to feel sympathy for what we think, say and do, without this meaning that we believe others are better than us. We are as unique as only we are and as good as any other human being. The path to finding or increasing your self-esteem can be complex, but it is undoubtedly fundamental to living better with yourself and with others.

There are various “exercises” to undertake this path: Setting small goals and achieving them, facing new experiences with courage and determination, rethinking and overturning the wrong image you probably have of yourself. And remember: You are not what you believe you are; there is a lot more inside you.
